Green Lanes - Our Heritage

Greenlane from the top of Narradale leading to The Millenium Way

This is the start of the Ballacobb Greenway. At 1.8km long, only the bottom 200m has survived the onslaught of motorbike use. The rest of this once beautiful grass track has been destroyed by people who care little for it. The Green Lane Users Group (GLUG) is directly responsible for monitoring and regulating the use of the Green Lanes, but they have certainly failed to look after this one. (these pictures were taken in June & November 2015, apart from the DEFA photos).

The condition of these grass lanes depends upon an intact grass cover. It is absolutely essential to keep this intact. Once this has been ripped and bikes keep riding in a groove, this mulches up and softens the soil. The next fall of rain then moves the soil downhill eroding the rut. As the rut deepens the bikes start to ride elsewhere and create more ruts. This is the process and what has happened on this grass lane, which were never built to withstand thousands of wheeled vehicles every year.

Does anyone benefit from allowing this to happen? If the Green Lane Users Group is incapable of preventing damage like this from occuring, then they need to be replaced with a group that will stop the Island's grass lanes from being destroyed in this way.

The track going south from Ballaugh into the hills is known as the Ballacobb Greenway. Damage along this track is so severe that it should be closed now to vehicles to prevent further destruction, and prevent water erosion washing away more of this track.
