Green Lanes - Our Heritage

The start of this greenway has a hard wearing surface that copes well with off-road motorbike use.

Further along the track the grass is still hanging on and stabilises the surface. But this too is being removed, and once it is lost the track surface will deteriorate with continual hard use and the process of water erosion.

The Monk's Pathway past Spooyt Vane in Glen Mooar is at least 1500 years old and once linked up all the Island's 220 keills. It is being systematically destroyed by off-road bikes, the soil and grass has been torn off and a section of it turned into a large 'V' shaped rock gully. It has now become extremely dangerous to walk, especially in the wet, and is not recommended for elderly people. 10 years ago this was a beautiful grass track along an ancient bridleway. Now it is a dirt-track for off-road bikes to negotiate, an obstacle course for their enjoyment. This track is in urgent need of repair.
