The Organisation

We are a group of individuals and organisations who care deeply about these ancient trackways that criss-cross our Island, and we are particularly concerned for their long term survival. Many of these tracks are derived from prehistoric Ancient Roadways, and are the original routes over the fells and valleys of the Island. The past 20 years have seen rapid and alarming changes in their condition as a result of a dramatic increase in motorcycle and quad bike activity, leading to serious erosion and environmental impact. Some are now so badly damaged, they are no longer usable. Horse riders have been denied the use of the Green Lanes because their surfaces are now so pitted with ruts that to take a horse along one of these damaged lanes would risk breaking the horses legs or ankles. 



Green Lanes - Our Heritage is an association of concerned individuals and organisations who wish to develop an awareness that greenways form an essential and fundamental part of our Manx heritage that needs to be cherished and protected for peaceful enjoyment. We believe that the paths to the hills are the pathway to our soul, that they are places to relax and unwind in the peace and tranquility of the countryside, and that they can play a key role in the development of a sustainable tourism economy.
