Horse riding along the green lanes on the Island has suffered extensively over the past 30 years. Due to the damage that has been left along the grass lanes mainly as a result of off-road motorbike activity and the serious water erosion damage that has resulted from this, horse riders can no longer use many green lanes because they are now far too dangerous. Extensive deep ruts now hide in the grass, and serve as effective horse traps. Broken ankles and injured horses would be the result if they attempted to, and some horses may have to be put down. Time and again horse riders and riding stables have told us that they would like to use the old green lanes if they were able to because the roads are far too busy, but they tell us that they have now effectively been barred. Once upon a time pack horses would have been one of the main users of the green lanes, but this is no longer possible.
