Green Lanes - Our Heritage

This old drover's track is a greenway (ie. vehicle weight limit 500kg). When it became badly damaged by the continual use by motorbikes, the DoI regraded the upper part of the track to a stony surface completely removing the grass cover. To save what is left of the this track, it should be reclassified as a 'Bridleway' for use by walkers and horses only, repaired, and closed for up to 5 years to allow the grass to grow back to re-stabilise the surface.

When a groove is created by motorbike wheels, erosion sets in and starts to wash away the track surface creating the ruts shown here.

Well worth the effort of walking back up the hill.

"The Slabs" are a highly popular section of old greenway in the south west of the Island. Motorbikes enjoy the challenge of riding up the exposed rock face, but the greenway above this has been extensively damaged. This is an old drover's track which connects the uplands to Niarbyl Bay. Only 20 years ago it was a beautiful grass track.
