Green Lanes - Our Heritage
Many videos filmed by off-road bikers on the Island posted onto sites like Youtube have now been removed because their owners are clearly embarrassed by what they show. Here are a few that can still be seen. (Please use the 'full screen' facility for the best clarity.)
This shows damage being done to the lane past Spooyt Vane. It has now been repaired and resurfaced. However it seems to be of enormous pleasure to these people to come over from the UK and wreck the Manx lanes. It may completely surprise you that certain MHK's like Laurence Skelly support this kind of tourism and destruct -ion of the Manx green lanes.
This video shows some of the damaged inflicted upon the Slieau Dhoo Link greenway, a once beautiful grass lane which runs east from Kirk Michael to the Druidale greenway. The original grass lane has disappeared under a maze of ruts created by 4x4's and bikes are now riding in the heather which is completely illegal and liable to fines up to £5.000.
This is what remains of the northern section of the Millenium Way. This damage extends over 2 miles, and in places is at least 40m across. This footpath is at least 4,000yrs old, but the dest-
ruction of it doesn't ever raise an eyebrow amongst certain MHK's.
Motorbikes often leave the designated tracks and ride across the hills. These acts are illegal. These motorbikes were seen riding across the hilside on Slieau Lhean. Such stupid acts tarnish people who wish to ride responsible and bring into
question the whole sport.
