Deep ruts cut into the heath alongside The Millenium Way. The post in the distance marks the line of this ancient footpath.

This is what is left of the 4.000 year old "The Royal Way". It was renamed in 1979 as 'The Millenium Way', some would say rather foolishly because this renaming detracted from the national importance of this ancient ridgeway. This is a 4,000 year old constructed track, and once upon a time was probably the most important track on the Isle of Man, connecting the North to the South. Several miles of this ancient track have now become unusable, with deep ruts making it impossible to walk along.

This is the start of The Millenium Way at Castletown, where it passes under the railway bridge next to Castletown station. The southern part of this path also became known as the Bayr ny Skeddan - "The Herring Way" - a 14 mile long footpath linking Castletown and Peel. Fisherman were able to walk this distance in one day.

The path runs along the east side of the Silverburn River, near Ballasalla Railway Station.

This shows a barrier put up across an illegal short cut made by bikes across the heather. So bikes have been ignoring it and riding around the end of the barrier.

The Millenium Way runs from Castletown, the original capital of the Island, to Ramsey across the hills. It was created in 1979 from sections of the original ancient footpath called the Via Regia (The Royal Way) which joined the south to the north of the island. This footpath is an ancient ridgeway that could be at least 4,000 years old. It is one of the oldest footpaths on the island, and should be registered as an Ancient Monument to protect it. The northern section around Skye Hill has now become severely damaged by motorbikes, by people who do not understand the significance of this historic track. This damage is now spreading south taking in more and more of this ancient and majestic footpath. This footpath needs protection as an ancient monument before anymore of it becomes lost. It is 4,000 years old and our politicians are allowing it to be destroyed in front of our own eyes! When WILL people WAKE UP to what is happening?
